A Message From Superintendent/Principal, Mr. Sweet:
I’m excited to start my third year as the principal/superintendent of our school district. The upcoming year presents opportunities for joyous celebration and for rewarding challenges. We must celebrate our elementary school’s second consecutive year being designated by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) as a “Beating the Odds” school. Our children’s achievement levels on the MEAP test were significantly higher than other schools of similar demographics across the state. We also have rewarding challenges lying ahead in the middle school as we focus on reducing our achievement gap. The gap between the scores of our highest performing students and our lowest performing students led MDE to identify our middle school as a “Focus School.”
Students, teachers, and administrators across the State of Michigan will continue to be held accountable for student achievement at increasing levels of public scrutiny. At Walkerville Schools we will work to refine our use of data to improve our instructional practices. We are committed to the review of assessment results and the implementation of processes to use this information to drive our student achievement levels higher. At the same we recognize the simple plan of having students read, write, and discuss issues and ideas at a substantive level on a daily basis can have a dramatic impact on achievement. It’s about finding the right balance.
Your involvement in your child’s education is critical to supporting continued success at all levels in the school district. Please accept this as an invitation to become involved at the classroom or school level. Pushing students to be ready for college and careers takes all of us working collaboratively; your involvement matters. Let’s make this next year the best year ever.
